I have been desperate to find the energy to blog...I have been pulled in so many directions lately (all of my own doing really) and pray that I establish some sense of true balance one day. Either way, I wanted to share some local goodness and love of these awesome friends!!

A little bit of background: seriously a local legend, I have so much respect for John because since I first met him 14+ years ago he has kept creating, expressing, being true to forms of art that have been misused and forgotten at times. John built this pyramid himself and had a bunch of us add pieces to the top to make it a communal message.

I think my friend JP or Cyndy took this, but this is one of the only pics of the piece in it's "completed" state. I think I look totally silly here, but my darling Jenny said I looked like a curator!

There is nothing Demetrius can't do. An amazing spoken word poet, a dancer, a painter-- another local genius! I have been lucky to spot a lot of his work and love the energy he brings to any venue!

Even though Kevin doesn't live on the island anymore, he is another one of those people I knew "way-back-when" who has continued on his path as an artist and is out there doing some amazing stuff!!

There are so many talented people hiding out here on Staten Island...and I love it. Rarely do I show pride, but lately I am proud of my home and at least a fair amount of people who inhabit it. I thank these and so many more friends who have made this place happen again...there will be more local love to share here! xoxo

WHERE WERE YOU? : Duels at The Assembly Room : December 12th 2008

"Art Parties" are good. I would like to just get that out there. They create a light community based atmosphere that is a real treat for those who attend. They really are the best way to get an arts community off it's feet and moving in a creative/positive direction. More than just hanging out at the local bar, these parties bring people together who would normally not ever encounter each other. Also they accomplish what "real" galleries oft fail at creating.

Openings suck. It's less a celebration of the artist(s) involved and more a place to be seen (scene). They create a strange tension of "what do I say to the artist?" and "am I wearing the right jeans?" This was not the case at Duels.

Duels took place on Friday, December 12th. It was held at The Assembly Room located in the second floor apartment of Brendan and Amanda. I've had the pleasure of visiting with Brendan on numerous occasions and truly understand and respect what he is attempting to do with the large living room in his apartment. The couple create events based around performance and two-dimensional art, invite people over, and let it unfold as it would.

The concept of Duels, if by name alone, is one of competition. There were two visual artists, two music acts, and two performance acts. Initial talks of the event brought out a competitive theme. One that would not decide a winner, but encourage collaboration and inspiration from the "opponent." The event was great. I had a great time and loo forward to attending more at The Assembly Room.

Mona Oman at Gallery Bar

The talented "Mona Oman" will be showcasing her work. Your best bet is to check out her site or support local artists and musicians branching out. The Gallery Bar site is not very comprehensive and has yet to list this event, but it does profile some other NYC artists of interest-- hopefully they will give the same due respect to "Mona Oman"! Check back for feedback on the show!! Feel free to comment on the artist, venue, event etc!! Support local artists! :X

Here is a place to connect, to organize, to showcase, to show off, to show pride, to look and see, to explore the beauty that we can make of our home. There is ugly everywhere you look, let's paint a different picture. Let's come together to recognize that we all have something to offer. Let's put on a different lens and make our home what we want it to be. In the words of Gandhi, "we must be the change we wish to see in the world." Send your links, your ideas, your photos...make a hub for people to see that their home is something lovely.
